Workshop: Does Instructor Presence in Online Lectures Enhance Student Engagement?

Online courses are becoming more commonplace. But how does one make an engaging lecture video? Some researchers have suggested that the mere presence of an instructor’s face can enhance student engagement. In this presentation, we will provide a brief overview of existing literature and discuss a recent experimental study in which we investigated the effect of the presence or absence of an instructor’s face on students’ engagement and learning.

Please join Dr. Jason C.K. Chan, professor of Psychology at Iowa State University, and Dahwi Ahn, Ph.D. Candidate of Psychology at Iowa State University as they share tips from their recent research.

  • Learn how to make students feel more engaged during video lectures.
  • Discover the role student preference plays in their engagement.
  • Gain valuable recommendations for creating future course content.
